BlueTech, the leading provider of global water technology market intelligence, announced that EY will present new research on the impact of megatrends on the global water industry at BlueTech’s annual Forum in Dublin, Ireland on 6-7 June 2017.

In the report, Upside of disruption: Megatrends shaping 2016 and beyond, EYQ, the EY think tank, defines eight megatrend categories that are driving disruption globally across industries. These categories are industry redefined, the future of smart, the future of work, behavioral revolution, health reimagined, resourceful planet, urban world and empowered customer.

John de Yonge, EY Insights Director for EYQ, will share how the megatrends defined in its report are shaping the future of the water industry. The result of a collaborative investigation by EYQ and BlueTech, these findings will be presented in de Yonge’s keynote at the Forum.

John de Yonge, EY Insights Director, EYQ, says:
“The intersections of megatrends are changing the way that water is treated, managed and consumed. For example, expanding urban population is increasing the pressure on water resource availability and infrastructure, but the growth of smart cities and decentralized technologies means water can be much better integrated into urban resource networks.

“Companies in the water sector are challenged by a number of disruptions emerging from the megatrends, such as the digitization of manufacturing, the changing nature of work and new competition coming from outside the sector. Water organizations will need to innovate to seize the upside of these disruptions.”

Paul O’Callaghan, BlueTech Research Chief Executive, says:
“Disruption is changing how the world works in ways that were unimaginable even a few years ago. Our collaboration with EY has been an extraordinary opportunity to bring together unparalleled specialists to find out what that means for the global water sector. I am delighted we will continue this conversation with John de Yonge at our BlueTech Forum in Dublin later this year.”

Among its findings, the report identifies water as being the most important medium for climate disruption through rising sea level, drought and flooding, exacerbating resource challenges in both developed and emerging markets. The report highlights coming changes to agricultural practices and irrigation technologies, greater uptake of desalination and water reuse, wider deployment of sensors and smart meters, and resource recovery from wastewater.

New analysis elaborates on this foundational research by applying the EYQ megatrends framework to water, focusing on how megatrend intersections will generate disruptions for water organizations from both a markets and operational perspective.
