Dr Alireza Abbassi Monjezi is the Founder and CEO at Waterwhelm, and the inventor of the game-changing forward osmosis technology. Ali completed his PhD in 2016 on forward osmosis desalination and worked as a post-doctoral researcher for 3 years where he published over 10 peer-reviewed articles in highly ranked international science and engineering journals. In 2019, Ali was awarded as the top young business founder in Scotland. Waterwhelm was also awarded as the top enterprise emerging from the University of Edinburgh in 2019. In 2020 and hosted by the University of Edinburgh, Ali was awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellowship.

Waterwhelm is also one of the 12 start-ups recently awarded a place on the TechX Clean Energy Accelerator from over 200 applications globally. Having secured substantial private/public funding since inception, Waterwhelm is now (2023) a team of 7, supported by a group of prominent advisors and industrial partners. Ali currently leads on the business development activities and contributes to scaling up the technology to commercial plants in various applications.
