Paul has over 25 years’ experience in the water treatment industry. He currently is Center Liaison Officer for the KAUST Water Desalination and Reuse Center (WDRC), bridging the gap between academia and industry as well as government, facilitating demand driven research and translating research to practice.

The Water Desalination and Reuse Center’s purpose is to transfer the water cycle by reducing water losses, energy consumption and use and discharge of chemicals and harvesting water, energy, nutrients and minerals from waste water and brine. The center’s vision is to support a water secure future that will enable social and economic prosperity in the Kingdom and beyond. The mission is to undertake fundamental and applied research that will deliver innovative solutions to the global challenges of water security, safety, sustainability and supply. To achieve this, WDRC has defined three flagship themes: Greener Desalination, Water Security and Waste to Resource.

Before working for KAUST, Paul fulfilled several roles in the water industry, varying from research to consultancy, sales and management, mainly in an international context. He is a guest lecturer at UNESCO-IHE and has served on various Dutch national advisory boards (e.g. Topsector Water, Royal Dutch Society of Engineers).

Paul previously served as Managing Director of Berson UV, a Netherlands based subsidiary of the UK Holding Company HALMA, with a global sales and service network, designing and manufacturing UV disinfection and oxidation equipment.

Paul holds a Master’s in Chemical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology. He is fluent in English, Dutch and German and can manage in French.
